How We Charge
For some matter types we charge a "fixed fee" for the whole service, and for some other types of matters we charge a "fixed Lawyer's fee" for the lawyer's service but some items (such as outlays) may vary from matter to matter. Details of these matter types are listed in our Fees Guide page contained in this website.
Our professional fee for matters which are not noted as "fixed fee" or "fixed Lawyer's fee", are charged at a quarterly/hourly rate. This rate does not include outlays or disbursements. These details are also found in our Fees Guide. Please note, this Firm does not issue "quotes" for its fees and outlays.
Emails
When sending our emails the primary internet domain we use is "ward.legal" (which is why you won't see '.com' or similar in our email address), but on occasion emails sent by us have automatically been directed by the recipient's email settings to their "spam/junk mail" folder. We will always reply to a genuine email we receive, so if you appear not to have received an email from us, please check your "spam/junk mail" folder, and alter your email settings to accept emails from us. Alternatively, you can send an email to "lawyer@wardlegal.au"
Cyber Hacking / Money Transfers (EFT)
We have been cautioned of the increasing threat of 'hackers' and 'scammers' accessing and interfering with certain emails containing bank account details. The bank account details have been altered and false details substituted. This caution does not simply relate only to law practices but as a general precaution you should not deposit/transfer any money without first verifying (by phone) with the intended recipient (including our Firm) the bank account details.

About Us
Les Ward
The principal of Ward Legal - Queensland, Les Ward, is a senior lawyer with over 4 decades of experience as a sole practitioner. After completing 5 years of Articles of Clerkship (effectively an apprentice Solicitor), Les was admitted as a Solicitor in Queensland in March 1982. Subsequently, he has been admitted to the High Court of Australia. Les is the holder of a current unrestricted Principal's Practising Certificate issued through the Queensland Law Society.
Les initially set up his law practice as a sole practitioner with his wife Kerry (also a senior lawyer) joining him in later years. Besides Les and Kerry, there are no other lawyers or support staff within the Firm.
What this means for clients of the Firm is that their matter will be handled by a qualified senior lawyer from start to finish and will not be delegated to a junior lawyer, a law clerk or even a paralegal.
In his early days of practice, Les concentrated primarily in litigation with an emphasis on the commercial aspects but also undertook substantial deceased estate administration. Today his impressive work experience boasts a wealth of knowledge ranging from commercial and business law, estate planning and elder law, personal injuries, family law, commercial and residential conveyancing, building units and body corporates through to marina law. In these times of 'labels', Les is referred to as a 'generalist lawyer' - something he relishes as he loves dealing with a variety of legal matters. He also believes there is still a place for a generalist lawyer in that they can offer a much wider perspective when assisting clients with their legal matters in that they take a more broad-band approach and often this may encompass other relevant issues.
Not simply staying within the practice of the law but as an adjunct to it, Les has previously been registered as a financial planner, loans broker, and insurance broker. It was during that time of his career he set up and operated what is now generally referred to as an MDP (multi-disciplinary practice) and as part of that MDP, he also set up and operated a real estate agency. Away from the practice of the law, Les dabbled in politics and for a number of years was the CEO of a former Queensland political party which in its heyday claimed 6 sitting members of the Queensland Parliament. Today, however, Les is merely content to practice only the law.
Les has a genuine passion that his clients have an understanding even in a modest way, of the legal service that he is providing for them. His 3 most common questions to a client are "You with me?", "You follow?" or "Clear as mud?" The words are not hollow to Les as he wants to ensure his clients have an understanding of the legal service being provided. Too often he will tell people if you go to any person that holds themself out as a professional in their area (and that includes trades) and you don't understand something they have told you, you always ask the question "Why?" And you keep asking that person the question until you as the client understand what that person has told you. Les adds, if need be the professional must be able to explain what they are doing in 2 syllable words. If they can't, then chances are they don't know what they're doing and you as the client should go and find someone else. So it is with Les and hence the questions he always asks. Kerry Ward Kerry Ward is also a senior lawyer. Moreso, for over 2 decades Kerry has been an Accredited Specialist in Personal Injuries Law. This is an acknowledgement given by the Queensland Law Society affirming a Queensland legal practitioner has achieved the knowledge and expertise in that particular area of law. For example, as at February 2025 Kerry is one of only 94 solicitors registered as Accredited Specialists in Personal Injury law in Queensland. Kerry completed her law degree in 1994 and immediately commenced 2 years of Articles of Clerkship with her now husband's law firm in Townsville. She was admitted as a Solicitor in Queensland in February 1996 and was subsequently admitted to the High Court of Australia. In December 2003, Kerry was registered as an Accredited Specialist in Personal Injuries Law which she retains to this time. Kerry now works with her husband Les at Ward Legal Qld, and though she is an Accredited Specialist and remains very active in Personal Injuries law, she has had a solid grounding in general legal matters during her early years as a Solicitor and Articled Clerk. Within the area of Personal Injuries law, Kerry's expertise in acting for claimants includes:• catastrophic injuries• work related injuries• worker's compensation claims• occupational asthma / respiratory injuries• motor vehicle accident injuries• public liability injuries• medical negligence• claims for total and permanent disablement (TPD) involving superannuation funds
Kerry's 'generalist' experience in conveyancing, estate planning including Wills and Powers of Attorney, estate administration and family law make her an invaluable team-member of Ward Legal Qld.
